Best video of a record-breaking downhill bike speed run I’ve ever posted »

I barely topped 30 mph once on my road bike while descending the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart and nearly had a little wee in my pants from fear. Presumably, Markus Stoeckl was feeling more confident when he hit 130.7 mph.

Observations on blog buffets apply to newspaper data centers, too »

Choire Sicha said about newspaper blogs what I’ve been thinking about newspaper “data centers” for a few months now.
Nearly all newspaper websites mistakenly segregate their blogs off with the other blogs. They’re organizing by form, not by content.
With that view of newspaper blogs in mind, and with all due respect because they took an important, [...]

Call it the case of the annoyingly overused newspaper lede »

Lazy newspaper writing drives me crazy. Trite phrases, pointless thesaurus-diving … I’m getting worked up just thinking about it. We’ve covered “to be sure” and “in a wide-ranging interview,” and lately I’m incredibly bothered by the “call it” lede. Some recent examples of the “call it” lede, followed by the subject of the story:

Call it [...]

> Magna Carta Is Going on the Auction Block (New York Times)
Very interesting story about the only copy of the Magna Carta in the United States heading for auction, where it’s expected to fetch $20 million to $30 million. But check out this opening:
The 2,500 words fill a page that is a couple of inches [...]

Shopping for an inspirational motto? »

If you’re in the market for a kick-ass inspirational motto for your striving-to-innovate newsroom, you wouldn’t go far wrong pinching, and truly living, this bit of corporate philosophy from Toyota, as quoted in The Toyota Way (which, as I mentioned, I’m apparently reading three years after everyone else on the planet):
We accept challenges with a [...]

A little light on words »

Careful readers will have noticed that I’ve been going a little light on the word-posting lately. (Indifferent readers might have noticed too, but, as they’re indifferent, frankly just couldn’t be bothered. Careless readers inexplicably put their laptop in the refrigerator last month, and haven’t been online since.) Just the usual story: Busy, busy, busy at [...]

My wellness and yoga getaway in north Georgia »

Well, not so much with the wellness and yoga, but we were in lovely north Georgia this weekend, near the wee town of Dahlonega, for a friend’s wedding. (It’s alleged that the phrase “thar’s gold in them thar hills” was first uttered in Dahlonega. I do love a good old-timey phrase.) The wedding, and [...]
