How I coaxed 35.4 miles per gallon out of my stupid Volkswagen
By William M. Hartnett on Aug 17, 2007 in oddities
Longtime readers, which is to say those that have been checking in since mid-March, will recall that I hate my 2001 1.8T manual transmission Volkswagen Jetta. This has not changed. It’s junk. However, by driving more conservatively than a frightened old lady, I coaxed 423.4 miles and 35.4 MPG out of my most recent tank. That’s about 33 percent better than the lifetime average of 26.5 MPG, which is even more remarkable considering I did it during the height of air-conditioning season here in South Florida. Am I the most efficient driver ever? Well, I don’t want to brag, but, yes. Absolutely yes.
