A one-off link roundup: 787, ties, blog design, PS3 prices, social networks, cat crack, over-40 pole dancing

Just a few odds and ends that I wanted to get on the record.
- Another sweet picture from the 787 roll-out event yesterday. Love the crowd of people to put the size of the plane in context. Look at the size of that Trent 1000!
- Jeff Jarvis says enough with the neck ties, already. I’m so with him on this one. You try wearing a silk noose on a 97-degree, 75-percent humidity July day in South Florida. The cape, on the other hand …
- Brian Gardner is seeing a surge in requests to design custom WordPress themes that look more like newspapers or magazines. I hope he means the print versions, as opposed to your typical link-, thumbnail- and banner ad-jammed newspaper.com.
- Sony slashes $100 off PS3 price. Knock another $300 off and I might consider buying one.
- Google, Yahoo both working on next-generation social networks. Maybe less utterly pointless than the current generation of social network sites? Maybe?
- Do-it-yourself kitty crack. Will Sullivan offered this one up, then suggested I experiment with strays if I’m too afraid to try it on my own cats. He’s a very bad man. A very, very bad man.
- Pole dancing 40 and over. Run a Google search for that phrase and my wife’s site is the sixth result. It’s hard to capture with mere words how proud this makes me.

Given your love of cats, you should appreciate this feed of recently updated R packages.

Wow, that’s a whole lot of geeky going on right there. This site’s feed is OK when applied to LOLCATS, but my wife’s site feed is practically poetry. Thanks for the excellent link. My productivity just nose-dived.

If you work from home it makes sense to not wear a tie. But I wear a suit everyday and it would look dumb if I did not wear a tie. It does suck in the summer but I look damn good! It could just be that I like to be on the minority of all arguments!

I’ve actually been thinking about making an improvised cool suit for someone in just your position, Ben. You have to wear a suit because you deal with doctors all day, but you’re also constantly getting in and out of hot cars.
So, my contraption would fit around one of the AC vents in your car like a big funnel-shaped suction cup. A flexible rubber hose would be attached to the cup, which you could then thread down the arm of your dress shirt. Now you’ve got the cool air flowing directly to where it’s needed most, not wasted blowing your hair around.
Genius, right? I’m going to gather the necessary parts next time I’m at Home Depot.

You know, you’ve leap-frogged over Kathleen’s blog into the #3 spot now on “pole dancing 40 and over.”

Looks like over-40 pole dancing enthusiasts are going to be seriously disappointed with Google.
