Embarrassing confession: I learned about donks in The New York Times

30clearNot to mention boxes and bubbles. I’m so out of touch with popular culture that the first time I saw the term “donks” was this weekend in The New York Times Magazine. See, now this is exactly the sort of thing that makes me appreciate the NYT Magazine so much, though that hardly mitigates the shame I feel for being so out of touch. I mean, it seems like I don’t know anything about what’s hot on the street these days, and I think it’s safe to say that there was a time not too long ago during which I was rather widely known to be quite street. Quite.

Which is not to say that I’m so disconnected from hi-rise culture that I won’t dive into it immediately, head-first, in complete ignorance and without any shame whatsoever. That’s just how I roll. I’m thinking a $30,000 set of clear 30-inch rims would give me instant credibility as I cruise past the Wendy’s drive-through in my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta. Wait until the fellas in the donks and bubbles hear that my whip was named the edmunds.com Editors’ Most Wanted Small Sedan Under $20,000 in 2001. Like I said, instant credibility.

Hey, it’s cool–the first time I heard of donks was in your blog posting.

Yeah, but I’m down here in South Florida, allegedly the fountainhead of the donk, box and bubble phenomenon. Clearly I’m not rolling in the right hoods.

    So…can I assume that you haven’t heard of ‘pop-trunk’ either? :)

Nope, haven’t heard about that term, either. Though, like the donk, box and bubble phenomenon, I have seen pop trunks in action. Just didn’t know what it was called. Thanks for the info!
