Big lower-court win for GIS users, open records advocates, journalists, California taxpayers and lovers of common sense. Pretty much every single story or project I’ve done at work in the past two years has relied on parcel-level GIS data obtained from our county property appraisers. It’s absolute insanity that governments try to charge tens of thousands of dollars for information created with taxpayer money. If that’s the case ’round your way, get down to the courthouse and start suing immediately.
