My shocking addiction to all things Google

I was feeling pretty cocky today about the BlackBerry outage because I do my mobile e-mailing via Gmail on my Q. Then I realized how vulnerable my reliance on all that the Google-verse has to offer makes me to a potentially far worse breakdown. Consider the truly vast extent of my addiction:

  • I publish my work and personal blogs with Blogger. There was a practical hosting reason for that two months ago when I started things up around here, and I’m now considering switching to WordPress, but I’m stuck with it for now.
  • I route all my e-mail through Gmail.
  • I also use Google Talk within Gmail quite a bit.
  • I use Google Reader to keep tabs on 138 feeds about journalism, cats, dogs, cars, monkeys, real estate, commercial airliners, soccer, etc.
  • I also keep tabs on my Gmail and Google Reader accounts, along with loads of other stuff, with my Google Personalized Homepage.
  • I check my site stats with Google Analytics relentlessly, and more than a little ludicrously considering my low traffic. (What’s up with the 14-hour gap in stat tracking the past two days, by the way?)
  • I keep a couple of spreadsheets in Google Docs & Spreadsheets, and I’m looking forward to trying out Google Presentations, or whatever they end up calling it.
  • I use the plain old Google Search all the time, of course.
  • I’m finding Google Blog Search increasingly useful.
  • I find myself on Google Book Search every now and then.
  • I find (steal) most of the clever images I post here in Google Image Search.
  • I have nothing but fun wandering through Google Patent Search.
  • I searched mainly for people I know a couple times in Google Scholar, but I can see how it could be more practically useful.
  • I have a few Google Alerts set up to keep me informed of all the latest developments regarding topics such as gorillas.
  • I have a few key dates scheduled years in advanced in Google Calendar.
  • I messed around with Google Page Creator a few times, though nothing really came of it.
  • I turned off my Google Search History when I realized it existed.
  • I’ve learned a lot at Google Webmaster Central.
  • I’m on YouTube all the time, killin ur bandwidth.
  • I’m finding Google Video surprisingly useful for clips pulled from YouTube.
  • I use Google Maps even more frequently, including the mobile version.
  • I’m in Google Earth all the time, mostly for fun.
  • I tried Google Desktop for a while, but didn’t really use it much.
  • I think Google Directory can be useful in very specific instances.
  • I track my vast, worldwide securities portfolio in Google Finance.
  • I find Google News both professionally troublesome and incredibly useful.
  • I took advantage of Google Pack to download a bunch of useful tools all at once.
  • I use Google Language Tools for simple translation tasks, usually involving foreign soccer coverage, and always with amusingly eccentric results.
  • I very recently, and gladly, found myself in Google Groups.
  • And I used the Google Toolbar for a while before switching back to Firefox’s integrated search box.

Which Yahoo! products do I use regularly? Pretty much just Flickr and Yahoo! Maps. Microsoft, aside from the ubiquitous operating system and Office suite? Virtual Earth 3D and the bird’s eye view features of Live Search Maps are pretty cool.

Wow. When you lay it all out like that, it really does seem pretty mental that I’ve become so incredibly intertwined with one company, doesn’t it?
