The Chicago Tribune editorial page, notorious for flip-flopping every 138 years, reconsiders its long-running support for the death penalty. Timothy J. McNulty, the public editor, notes that the change generated “barely a ripple” of public opinion.
Is that because, as McNulty notes, “Abolition of the death penalty isn’t on the political radar at the moment,” or is it that your typical reader has not cared terribly much about unsigned newspaper editorials in, oh, about 138 years?
