Conference notes, Vol. 5

Derek Willis points out that this year’s conference “is by far the Webbiest that it has ever been,” and it’s hard to overstate how true that is. There are the actual demos and panels, of course, notably the three separate “CAR and the Web” sessions, but the shift toward webbiness is probably even more noticeable in the attitudes. It’s an exciting era. A couple other nuggets I found particularly interesting:

Anne Saul of Gannett mentioned that they’ve trained 350 print journalists in shooting and editing video, with more to come, and that they’ve produced about 9,800 news videos. The pros from the television side of the company apparently were enlisted in the training effort. Seems like every media company with both print and television divisions could be doing the same. Is this already happening elsewhere?

David Milliron of the AJC, whose new position in that paper’s restructured newsroom is an interesting blend of IT and editorial, said they’ve upped their training requirements for reporters from 20 hours a year to 30. I don’t know exactly what the training consists of, I was just surprised and gratified to hear that it’s a job requirement. Why isn’t that more common?
