Conference notes, Vol. 3

I taught an introductory Excel class this morning in something called the “Rockefeller Board Room,” which was a truly excellent setting. Generous wood paneling, numerous paintings depicting a fox hunt. Throw in a couple of elderly white financiers, industrialists and railroad barons with ample beards and/or carefully groomed mustaches and Rockefeller himself would have felt quite at home, though, presumably, he also would have been completely lost during the Excel lesson.
Speaking of outstanding mustaches, Dan Keating of The Washington Post is in possession of one. As someone hopelessly unable to grow a presentable amount of facial hair, I admire a quality mustache. I look forward to puberty.
Keating and Jason Grotto of The Miami Herald, another guy who looks like he would have no trouble sorting out a beard, did a panel on local government contracts. It was neck-and-neck as to which agency has more incompetent and corrupt contracting practices, but, by my score, Washington, D.C. city government has the Miami-Dade School District beat. No mean feat.
Coming this afternoon: Working with home mortgage data, getting reporters and web developers to work together, and methods for making data interactive. That’s what I call excitement.
Also, don’t miss this: Painted but otherwise bare lady bits at the Herald. Spicy.
